The Showering of Iron on Earth

From the Quran:

“Verily, WE have sent Our messengers with clear proof

And provided them with scripture and a balance scale

So that humankind can deal in justice.

And WE showered iron (upon the earth), a source of

Immense power and of benefits to humans,

All, so that God may identify those who will stand for Him

And for His messengers, sights unseen.

Lo! God is Almighty, and Strong.”

Quran, 57:25–26

In previous articles, we have touched upon the fact that human knowledge, no matter how far it advances, remains limited while the knowledge of God is unlimited. To close that gap, God has sent His messengers to bring to their people the message of the Lord of the universe.

We also mentioned previously how the people who are in awe of the powers of God the most tend to be the scholars. Einstein spoke loudly and clearly on how he was in awe of that power. I bring up today a quote from another great scientist, Werner Heisenberg the father of quantum mechanics who said:

“The first gulp from the glass of natural science will turn you into an atheist,

But at the bottom of the glass God is waiting for you.”

It seems to me in interpreting the above phrase, that Mr. Heisenberg is making fun of those people who as soon as they learn something, they think they know it all.

Returning to the above verses from the Quran, we see that two reasons God set as a reason to send His messengers:

1- To provide knowledge about HIM through scripture.

2- To establish justice on the face of the earth.

This is followed up with a reminder of one of HIS favors upon the world by showering the earth with iron.

Science is completely aware of the fact that iron is not native to our planet earth. It, along with all chemical elements was showered upon this planet — and perhaps others as well — when a supernova star died. Upon exhausting its fuel and exploding, the supernova emitted all chemical elements generated within it into space.

As to why iron was picked specifically, it is perhaps because a significant number of people associate iron as the building block of all civilizations. It is estimated that there is about 800 billion tons of crude iron ore embedded within our planet earth. Not known to many, however, is that iron constitute an essential part in keeping us alive by its role in carrying out oxygen from the lungs and later in combining with carbon dioxide, to bring back to the lungs for refining.
